 FACT SHEET

The Capital PC User Group, Inc (CPCUG) was founded in 1982, making it one of the oldest personal computer user groups in the country. It is also one of the largest, with over 4,000 members in the greater Washington, DC area. The group is all-volunteer with a central theme of "Users Helping Users." CPCUG is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization. More than 60 percent of our members make decisions and/or recommendations about the purchase of computer equipment within their companies or government agencies.

CPCUG sponsors a wide variety of monthly activities in various locations in the Washington, DC area.

Meetings include monthly meetings with presentations from vendors and other experts, weekend seminars and comparative demonstrations of competing software, and many special interest groups (SIG). It offers many levels of training classes and maintains a 13-line computer bulletin board system (BBS) for the use of its members. It publishes a monthly magazine (the Monitor) with many articles written by members that address the wide interests of Personal Computer users, and maintains a "Helpline" listing of volunteers who will provide advice or technical assistance to other members over the phone.

CPCUG also coordinates efforts by members who would like to contribute their computer expertise to other charitable and non-profit organizations in the metro DC area. Our members have assisted in setting up the computer systems for the National Bone Marrow registration project as well as other worthwhile charitable organizations.

CPCUG holds its monthly general meetings in the Masur Auditorium in Building 10, the Clinical Center, on the National Institutes of Health campus in Bethesda, Maryland. To serve the needs of members distributed over a large geographic area, regional meetings with outside presenters are also held each month in Reston and Springfield, VA, and Baltimore, MD.

The general meetings and comparative software demonstrations (also held at NIH) are free and open to the public. For those who are more interested in a specific area of computers, i.e. communications, investing, database, spreadsheet, word processing etc., we have Special Interest Group (SIG) meetings and specialized training sessions. These are also open to the general public. The focus of the BBS is providing users with a way to ask questions and receive help on virtually any computer-related topic, in keeping with CPCUG's "Users Helping Users" philosophy. It also provides a fast and efficient medium for providing up-to-date information of CPCUG activities, and as a forum for discussions about the group's activities and services. CPCUG has its own domain on the Internet; mail should be addressed to admin@cpcug.org.

With the exception of a paid Executive Director and two part-time assistants, all of our services are performed by volunteers.

CPCUG does not expend any funds for social functions. All revenues and donations are put to efficient use and benefit many people, even beyond our membership. CPCUG is not a political organization, has no ties to any political or religious group, and is not affiliated with any computer hardware or software company.
